I am super ready for this semester to be over. I have a week and a half left and it feels like it is going by so slow. I can’t wait for summer, but I also dread it. In college, summer means that all of your friends go home and are gone for several months. I am not looking forward to my friends leaving, but I hope that I will make some more friends that live here in Mobile.

I can’t wait to go to the beach everyday and go to bars. Summer is going to be great.

Shell Island

Every year, my family takes a vacation to Panama City Beach, Florida. I have gone every year since I was 2 and therefore, can’t imagine a summer without going. We stay for a week and do your typical family things: eating out, swimming, beach days, blah, blah, blah. Well, for the past three or four years we have been doing something that was new to me and still continues to be exciting.

Now, every year my family will rent a boat and we will take it out to Shell Island to go snorkeling for the day. We see dauphins, jellyfish, stingrays, crabs, sea urchins, blowfish, and so much more every time we go. It really changes the way you think about the ocean. There is just something about actually swimming with these incredible creatures and seeing how they thrive in the wild that gives you a new appreciation for it.

After snorkeling for several hours, we will take the boat to the island and get off. We walk about a quarter mile to the other side of the island. The island is covered with tall grass that blows in the breeze and is only broken by one trail that leads to the other side. The sand is pure white and so hot you have to practically jog across. It always leads to a fun race between the adults and children.

Once to the other side we all just stop running. We stop running, talking, laughing and we just look. I’ve been several years now and I still find the beach mesmerizing. It is almost always empty when we go. Maybe once or twice has there been another small family, but they are usually so far away that they are reduced to just little figures dancing in the sun.

The ocean is cool and refreshing after the walk across the island. Its pale green waves welcome us in and seem to call us. The large waves carry us up and down and the curious fish come to see us. We spend the rest of our day here and enjoy having the ocean to ourselves. It almost feels like we have the entire ocean to ourselves.

Then we take the boat back and watch as the dauphins chase us. The sun sets and we finish off the day with a movie, singing, dancing, and laughing.

I figured since it is the first day of Spring I should write a post about what I hope to accomplish this spring. The weather is nice and I am feeling motivated.

This Spring I hope to:

  • Make the Dean’s List again
  • Have deeper relationships with my friends
  • Get a job
  • Have my photography business take off
  • Save money
  • Plan a trip
  • Write my book
  • Work on my documentary
  • Edit videos
  • Finish my website

Dauphin Island

Today, I took Halee and Mackenzie to the beach with me. We shot some video and took some pictures. It was really fun. We lied out under the sun for hours and enjoyed the water.

This is one of my favorite places. There is never a lot of people there so when I go, I feel like I have the entire beach to myself. I can sit and read and get the best pictures.

Eye Project

For the past few days, my laptop has not been allowing me to upload pictures to wordpress, so I have not been able to post. However, I think the problem has been solved since it is letting me post this picture of Mackenzie’s eye.

So, a couple of weeks ago, I decided to take on a project that I am calling the Eye Project. I believe that eyes can tell a lot about a person. They tell stories and if you really look into them, you can sometimes learn these stories. They hold happiness, sadness, anger, wonder, and so many more emotions. I wanted to see all of this in people.

I have been taking pictures of people’s eyes. I have pictures of family, friends, and even strangers. I look at the pictures and try to imagine what all the eyes have seen, where all they have been, and where all they are going. I think about the times they have cried in both sadness and joy. The times that they have looked at the person that they love. Eyes tell so much.

I have often heard that the eyes are the portal to the soul and I can definitely believe it.

Mardi Gras

This year was my first year to celebrate Mardi Gras. I absolutely loved it. I had a little bit of an idea of what it would be like from what people had told me, but nothing can really prepare you for it.

It is an entire month of partying and celebration. Every weekend, parades full of floats, bands, horses, dancers, etc. go down the streets. The best part is that they are throwing you stuff. They throw beads, stuffed animals, cups, coasters, moon pies, crème pies, ribbons, and other little toys. The crowds go crazy over the stuff.

My backseat in my car is full of all of this stuff. I received over 300 bead necklaces. It’s so many beads that I don’t know what to do with them.

Fat Tuesday is the last day of celebration. It is on the last day of February and it is crazy. It is when the best parades and parties are. Everyone goes crazy and spends all day having fun. They spend all day in the sun and all night drinking and dancing.

The only bad part is that you have to return back to work and school on Wednesday. I am so looking forward to next year.

The Swamp at Sunset

Yesterday, I was feeling extremely motivated. I have been having trouble with motivation here lately. I haven’t felt like doing my school work and I hadn’t picked up my camera in forever. Well yesterday, something changed. I haven’t been able to put my camera down.

Around 5, I decided I wanted to go to my university because there is a swamp there that I had never taken pictures of. Mackenzie, my sister, her friend, Kendall, and Liam all decided to go with me. As we were leaving, Mackenzie’s car started to mess up and we had to fix it before we could leave.

We finally got it working and then had to drive the 15 minutes to school. It became a race to get to the bridge over the swamp before the sun went down and we lost the light. My heart raced as I flew around corners and passed cars.

We finally made it. The sun was in the perfect position and it reflected its yellow light across the water. All of my friends and I stood in awe as the sun slowly moved down behind the trees. Its light and warmth touched our skin for as long as it could and then it was gone, replaced by pinks and oranges in the sky.

We followed up our experience with a quick hike on one of our walking trails. It was perfect.

Geology Club

Geology Club is one of the best things that I have ever been a part of. The people in the club are so smart and so good at what they do.

We go on fieldtrips to super cool places around Alabama and the surrounding states. We went to Dismals Canyon and went cave exploring last semester. This semester, we are going to Hogg Mine in LaGrange, Georgia. What’s fun about the trips is that we get to go camping. Camping with your friends is the best kind.

We have movie nights where we all get together and commentate the movies. It is so fun having everyone making jokes the entire time. It makes movie watching more enjoyable.

We also get to participate in the school’s homecoming parade. This is one of my favorite things. I love parades, but being a part of them is even better than watching them.

Geology Club is one of my favorite things. I plan on being a member every year that I’m in college. I love it. They know how to make rocks interesting.

My 2 Best Friends

Mackenzie and Madison have been my best friends for the majority of my life. They are the two most important people in my life and I cherish our memories together.

They always keep me laughing. There is never a dull moment when we are together. We listen to music, talk, laugh, watch movies and do so much more.

My favorite memories of us together are of us dancing to Disney songs in Mackenzie’s living room at 2 in the morning.

We have David Spade and Adam Sandler movie marathons and have late night food runs to McDonald’s.

My best friends are so important to me. I don’t know where I would be without them. I love them.

Star Gazing

Last night, my friend, Zachary, invited Mackenzie and me to go to school and go star gazing with the astronomy class. It was really fun. The professor was there and so he helped explain where the constellations were and what they meant. We also saw the International Space Station pass by and disappear in mid space. The night sky was lit up with little dots of white that look so small, but are actually huge. It was breathtaking.

After we left the school, we decided to go back to my place and continue star gazing. We took a blanket and laid it out in my yard then lied there together under the stars.

We talked about the constellations, life, the future, and almost everything in between. We seemed to talk all night, but it was only 10 when we checked.

It was a perfect night full of friends and laughter. I would love to do it again.
